What to do if one of partners is HIV positive?

If at the planning stage of pregnancy one of the partners discovered a positive HIV status, the couple needs to reconsider their reproductive plans. The second partner must undergo an HIV test (antibody test or polymerase chain reaction with a search for viral copies).

In the future, the infectious disease doctor supervising the couple will write down the treatment regimen and help to adjust the reproductive plans.

Can HIV-infected women be surrogate mothers?

If, during a check-up examination before participating in a surrogacy program, a woman has antibodies to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), then an algorithm is prescribed to her:

  • control analysis (PCR for HIV)
  • consultation with an infectious disease specialist

If the diagnosis is confirmed, unfortunately, the patient cannot participate in the surrogacy program.

Yes, HIV treatment regimens today include low-toxicity drugs that enable people to live a fulfilling life. But the high risks of a surge in viral load, the possibility of several ways of transmitting HIV to the child (through the placenta or during childbirth), the frequency of concomitant infections can lead to irreversible consequences for the mother and baby.
