According to the WHO, male factor infertility occurs in about 40% of couples who unsuccessfully try to become parents. Obstruction of the vas deferens, immaturity or low motility of spermatozoa, pathology of the spermatogenic epithelium: all these factors nullify the likelihood of independent release of mature sperm with subsequent fertilization.
But medicine does not stand still: it is possible to defeat the male factor of infertility with the help of a simple and minimally traumatic testicular biopsy procedure.
MILITTA IVF International Agency cooperates with the best clinics in Kyiv. Experienced doctors, modern equipment, high success rates: we know how to help you overcome infertility.
Testicular biopsy: indications for the procedure
Testicular biopsy is indicated for patients with infertility caused by the following factors:
- Obstruction of the vas deferens (strictures, adhesions, tumors)
- Varicose veins of the spermatic cord
- Cryptorchidism ( undescended testicles into the scrotum)
- Previous orchitis or testicular torsion
- Low sperm motility
- Bilateral inguinal hernia
- Reduced spermatogenesis
In some cases, a testicular biopsy may be indicated for patients preparing for chemotherapy or radiation therapy. MILITTA IVF International Agency provides a full range of opportunities for the collection and cryopreservation of biomaterial in the leading partner clinics in Kyiv.

Testicular biopsy: information for patients
To prepare for the procedure, adhere to the following recommendations:
- Complete sexual rest 7-10 days before the procedure
- Refusal of alcohol and hot bath procedures
- Refusal to take medications (by prior agreement with the doctor)
Before the intervention, a routine examination is indicated:
- General blood and urine tests
- Assessment of the blood coagulation system
- Consultation of a specialized specialist (urologist-andrologist)
Your doctor may recommend the following testicular biopsy formats, depending on your clinical circumstances:
- TESA: vacuum aspiration of sperm directly from the testicle. It is performed using a microcannula . Least invasive procedure: does not require stitches, repairs or restrictions.
- TESE: Direct testicular biopsy, during which a doctor excises a small piece of sospermatogenic epithelium from the testicular tissue . The procedure is more invasive than standard vacuum aspiration, but as a result, the doctor can retrieve a larger volume of mature sperm.
- M-TESE ( micro- TESE): microsurgical extraction biopsy, during which the doctor removes testicular and cord tissue, and then, under a microscope, separates the spermatogenic epithelium with mature cells. This technique is the “procedure of choice” in situations where the spermatogenic epithelium is severely damaged or the patient’s condition makes it impossible to perform standard extraction.
The biopsy is performed under general anesthesia. The doctor will tell you about the peculiarities of the recovery period at an in-person consultation.
