One of them is the collection of eggs. This is a minimally invasive procedure in which mature oocytes ready for fertilization are removed from the patient’s ovary. In the future, punctured oocytes can be used for IVF ICSI, cryopreservation for long-term storage or donation.
Egg puncture: how the procedure is performed
1.5 days before the planned puncture date, the patient is injected with a special stimulator of follicular growth. Before the procedure, it is necessary to give up sexual intercourse and physical activity. As well as before any other invasive manipulation, the patient must undergo an examination:
- Ultrasound of the pelvic organs (to exclude pathological formations and control ovulation).
- Complete blood test with leukocyte count.
- Blood test with determination of blood clotting time.
After examining the research results, a trusted therapist or family doctor will issue a diagnostic opinion on the patient’s health and give permission for admission to the procedure.
The procedure itself consists of the following steps:
- Anesthetic injection (at the request of the patient).
- Ultrasound control and “capture” of follicles for puncture.
- Antiseptic treatment of external genital organs.
- Puncture of the ovary through the anterior wall of the vagina (under ultrasound control).
- Aspiration of an oocyte from the ovary, transfer to a nutrient medium for preservation.
After the procedure, the patient is under the supervision of specialists from the MILITTA partner clinic.
Do I need cryopreservation of my own oocytes after puncture?
Freezing of oocytes ( cryopreservation of biomaterial) is an optional procedure, which has a number of advantages:
- The opportunity to participate in the IVF program in the future
- Long-term storage of unchanged, high-quality eggs
- Preservation of material in case of loss of fertility (ovarian injury, chemotherapy, artificial menopause, ovarectomy )
The patient can discuss the need for egg freezing, the possibility of further use with a reproductologist at a consultation.
